By following a year-round calendar, you can ensure your RV is always ready for your next adventure. A little bit of planning and the right storage solution will protect your investment and allow you to fully enjoy the freedom and flexibility that RV ownership provides. Happy trails!
For those of us in Houston, owning an RV is the ultimate key to freedom. It’s the promise of spontaneous weekend trips to Galveston, educational family outings to Space Center Houston, or even a cross-country journey to escape the summer heat. Your recreational vehicle isn't just a mode of transportation; it's a vessel for creating lasting memories. But, as any seasoned Houstonian RVer knows, our city's unique climate presents a year-round challenge when it comes to storing and maintaining our beloved homes-on-wheels. From the blistering summer sun and pop-up thunderstorms to the pervasive humidity, protecting your investment is paramount. That's where a well-thought-out storage plan comes in.

To help you navigate the seasons, we’ve created a Houstonian’s year-round RV storage calendar, with a little help from our storage facility, Home Free Storage, located at 12450 Beamer Rd in the 77089 area of Harris County.

Spring (March - May): The Great RV Awakening

As the azaleas bloom and the humidity begins its steady climb, it's time to awaken your RV from its winter slumber. Spring in Houston is the perfect time for a pre-season shakedown.

De-winterize and Inspect: If you winterized your RV, now is the time to flush the antifreeze from the water lines, sanitize the fresh water tank, and de-winterize the plumbing. This is also a great time to inspect your tires, check for any leaks in the roof or windows, and test your appliances. Spring Cleaning: Give your RV a thorough cleaning, both inside and out. A good wash and wax will protect the exterior from the impending summer sun. Plan Your Adventures: With the weather at its most pleasant, consider a trip to Buffalo Bayou Park for some outdoor recreation or a visit to the Houston Zoo. With your RV prepped and ready, you can be on the road in no time.

Summer (June - August): Beating the Heat and Humidity

Houston summers are no joke, with temperatures soaring into the upper 90s and humidity that you can wear like a blanket. This is when your RV is most vulnerable to the elements.

Protect from the Sun: The relentless Texas sun can wreak havoc on your RV's exterior, causing paint to fade and decals to peel. If you're not using your RV frequently during the summer, a dedicated storage facility is a must. While uncovered parking is a common option, a secure facility like
Home Free Storage with its fenced and gated perimeter and digital video surveillance provides peace of mind that your RV is safe from more than just the sun. Combat Humidity: The high humidity can lead to mold and mildew inside your RV. When in storage, consider using moisture absorbers or a dehumidifier to keep the interior fresh and dry. Thunderstorm Ready: Houston is known for its intense thunderstorms. A secure storage facility ensures your RV is in a safe location and not at risk of damage from falling branches or other debris.

Fall (September - November): The Prime Time for RVing

As the temperatures begin to drop, Houston's RVing season kicks into high gear. This is the perfect time to explore the city's cultural offerings.

Hit the Road: Take a trip to the Museum District and visit the Menil Collection or the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. With your RV as your home base, you can immerse yourself in the city's vibrant arts scene. A visit to the historic Battleship Texas is another great fall excursion. Easy Access is Key: With more frequent trips, you'll appreciate the convenience of a storage facility with easy drive-up access. You can swing by, pick up your RV, and be on your way to your next adventure without any hassle.

Winter (December - February): A Mild Winter's Nap

Our winters may be mild, with temperatures in the mid-40s, but that doesn't mean you should neglect your RV.

Winterize for Houston: While we don't have to worry about deep freezes, it's still a good idea to winterize your RV's plumbing to prevent any damage from an unexpected cold snap. Pest Prevention: Cooler weather can drive pests to seek shelter. Make sure to seal any potential entry points and consider using pest deterrents to keep critters at bay. Secure Storage for the Off-Season: Even if you're not using your RV as much, a secure storage spot is crucial.

Home Free Storage offers not just RV storage, but also options for boat, vehicle, traditional self storage and even temperature-controlled self-storage, making it a one-stop-shop for all your storage needs.
